Abstract

Objective: to carry out an integrative review of the literature, seeking to discuss the main changes caused by whitening gels on the surfaces of restorative materials (composite resin, dental ceramics) and tooth enamel. Method: a literary survey was carried out in the databases: PubMed and BVSalud from 2000 to 2022 using the descriptors: Dental whitening (Tooth Whitening), whiteners (Whiteners) and surface properties (Surface properties), in addition to a search carried out in the references of these articles to complement the information collected. Results: systematic review articles, in vitro laboratory research and clinical case reports were the subject of exploratory analysis and, after careful filtering, 16 articles were selected to compose the study. Conclusion: the high variety of results shows that more comprehensive studies on the subject are still needed, which are capable of observing how the changes caused by whitening gels impact the oral cavity.
