Abstract

The pregnancy, the birth of a baby and the postpartum period correspond to propitious events of questions and emotional changes from the parents, especially for the mom. The postpartum period is a period that generates, not only physiological but also psychological new challenges, in which it is necessary to adapt to a new reality. The pospartum depression is a serious clinical condition which causes a negative impact for the mom, the child and the family. The early and adequate diagnosis reduces its negative impacts and complications resulting of the disease. The objective: To identify the perception of who has recently given birth about the postpartum depression. Methodology: A descriptive and exploratory study with qualitative approach. That study stem from semi-structured interviews recorded, transcribed and grouped in categories following the Content Analysis according to Bardin's perspective. The study enables to identify which part of women find more difficulties with the self-evaluation and understand psychological changes, for this reason, they don't expose their feelings, take too long or don't look for professional help, increasing the risks of a biggest psychological condition. Because of this, it is necessary to emphasize the importance of a good prenatal care, perform groups to learn about the perinatal period, postpartum consultation and the family therapy to prevent the postpartum depression, the early diagnosis and treatment with the intention of empower this women and their support network, reducing the possibility of interference in the life of all those inserted in the meaning process of the puerperium.
