Local anesthetics and anesthesia: literature narrative review for clinical practice

Abstract

Objective: to review the literature on key elements for the correct use of local anesthetics. Method: narrative review of 41 works available in the databases Medline/PubMed, BIREME and publications of the Brazilian Society of Anesthesiology (SBA). Results: the mechanisms of action, the pharmacokinetics, the pharmacodynamics, the maximum doses, the dilution technique, the alert situations and the behaviors regarding the suspected intoxication were described. The particularities of groups such as newborns, pregnant women and the elderly were also described. Conclusion: the results make up the collection of knowledge that makes the professional more qualified to use the local anesthetic.
