Abstract

Introduction: The increasing prevalence of childhood obesity is a public health problem. Interdisciplinary group care provides a favorable environment for discussions of difficulties in the treatment of obesity and acts as a motivator for behavior change. Objectives: Evaluate the treatment of childhood obesity in a group and report the experience from the perspective of facilitators, children, adolescents and parents. Methods: Twenty-one subjects, aged between 8 and 15 years, from the Pediatric Endocrinology Outpatient Clinic of Hospital Regional da Asa Norte, who participated in the interdisciplinary educational group organized in seven monthly meetings in 2018, were evaluated, retrospective, using medical records to collect anthropometric data; and evaluation of the group through the participants' reports and the evaluative questionnaire prepared by the team. Results: Among the 21 subjects, nine were excluded because they missed more than three meetings. According to the body mass index (BMI) Z score, two subjects (17%) showed a reduction in the index, seven subjects (58%) did not change and three (25%) had an increase. The format of group care showed that 75% of the subjects showed maintenance or reduction in the Z score of the BMI. Through the exchange of experiences, the following themes were discussed: the role of the family; strategies for behavior change; how to face issues such as bullying, depression and anxiety. Conclusions: The group approach has been shown to be effective in the treatment of childhood obesity, becoming an alternative for the treatment of the disease within the public service.
