Abstract

Introduction: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) is a chronic autoimmune disease with risks of complications in the presence of inadequate glycemic control. Objectives:Assess the clinical and epidemiological profile of children and adolescents with DM1. Methods: There were  evaluated themedical records of 155 patients with DM1, aged 0 to 18 years, admitted to the Specialized Center for Diabetes, Obesity and Hypertension, between November 2017 and January 2019. This is an observational, descriptive and retrospective study. Results: Of the total, 52% are female, 63% are teenagers, 86% were diagnosed with DM1 between 0 and 11 years of age and an average disease duration of 5.4 years. The majority came from the Integrated Development Region of the Federal District and Surroundings (RIDE) (24.5%), followed by the Central Region (18%). The occurrence of ketoacidosis at diagnosis was 44%. All undergo intensive treatment, 83% are using insulin analogues and 48% are counting carbohydrates. Anthropometric evaluation shows 6% short stature, 5% thin, 14% overweight and 1% obese. The mean glycated hemoglobin was 9.2%, being lower in children aged 5 to 11 years (8.3%) and higher in adolescents (9.7%). Thyroid disease was present in 11% of the sample and the most frequent complication was dyslipidemia (14%). Conclusion: The glycemic control of the evaluated patients is above the expected goals and is greater in adolescents. Based on the results, clinical and educational strategies will be developed to achieve better glycemic control.
