Abstract

A systematic literature review and meta-analysis were performed to determine the effect of treatment of preconceptional periodontal disease or during pregnancy on reducing the risk of adverse gestational outcomes. Large randomized controlled trials were included and four studies met the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis revealed no reduction in premature births <37 weeks (p = 0.36), premature births <35 weeks (p = 0.46), low birth weight (; p = 0.87) and preeclampsia. (p = 0.56) between test and control group. Periodontal treatment in pregnancy did not reduce the occurrence of adverse gestational outcomes, and the effect of preconceptional periodontal treatment on adverse gestational outcomes remains unanswered in the literature.
