Changes in eating behavior during the period of social isolation in the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

Introduction: since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, part of the Brazilian population has gone through social isolation, with care to mitigate the effects of the virus. Emotional hunger, triggered by situations of depression, anxiety, stress, in which food is seen as a compensation. Objectives: to analyze changes in eating behavior during the period of social isolation Method: an online form published on social media was applied, targeting the adult population. Results: 420 people participated in the survey, 90% were female, 91.7% were in isolation with family/friends, 77.8% exposed changes in their diet, 53.8% said they were eating more food. Among those who felt good in quarantine, 93.9% reported that they had changes in relation to food, 65.2% consumed more food, 62.8% found solace in food and 61% felt hungry frequently (p< 0.05). Conclusion: There was a change in the behavior and eating habits of the participants during the period of social isolation.
