Adequacy of Nutritional Therapy in critically ill patients

Abstract

Objective: to evaluate the impact of enteral nutritional therapy on the clinical outcome of critically ill patients admitted to an Intensive Care Unit. Method: prospective, observational study, carried out by evaluating patients admitted to an Intensive Care Unit, aged 18 years or over, undergoing exclusive Enteral Nutritional Therapy, and collecting sociodemographic data in electronic medical records. Results: 80 patients were included, mostly adults (53.75%) and 68.8% male. Among non-survivors there was a prevalence of elderly people, patients who had an energy adequacy less than 80% and an average amount of calories and proteins infused lower than the established goal. Furthermore, diarrhea, a sign of dietary intolerance, has also been associated with mortality. Conclusion: Nutritional Therapy impacts the clinical outcome of critically ill patients, although it is necessary to consider other interfering factors to improve the quality of the associations.
