Nutrition Assessment of Chronic Kidney Disease Patients on Hemodialysis

Abstract

Introduction: Protein-Energy Wasting (PEW) is very common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), especially among those on hemodialysis, and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in this population. The prevalence of PEW may vary according to the diagnostic method. Objective: Identify, through literature review, the nutritional assessment methods commonly used and the prevalence of malnutrition in CKD patients on hemodialysis treatment. Methods: it was carried out through literature review of published scientific articles 2005 to 2015. The combination of the following descriptors were used: “chronic kidney disease”, “nutritional assessment” and “malnutrition” in Portuguese and English. Results: We selected 14 articles after application of the exclusion criteria. Anthropometric methods, and serum albumin levels have limitations due to changes in body composition in CRF patients. Subjective methods appear to be more effective in identifying DPE. Recently, ISRMN (Kidney International Society of Nutrition and Metabolism) DPE proposed new diagnostic criteria in patients with CKD based on biochemical measurements, body weight, lean mass and food intake. Conclusion: The criteria proposed by ISRMN seem to be promising, but further studies are needed to validate.
