Abstract

Introduction: Uterine Cervical Neoplasms is the fourth most common type of cancer among women. This study aims to identify the perception of women about the Papanicolau preventive exam. Methods: Qualitative study with 17 women through an interview recorded between June and July 2016. The data were analyzed using simple descriptive statistics and content analysis. Results and discussions: Most participants (58.82%) had a median age of 45 years and incomplete elementary education (47%). The categories were grouped as follows: 'Women's demand for Papanicolau preventive exam', 'Women's knowledge about cervical cancer prevention' and 'Feelings experienced on the occasion of Papanicolau preventive exam’. Conclusion: The perception of women reflects aspects of loss prevention policies and actions. Thus, it is necessary to expand health education in primary care.
