Teaching information and communication technologies in brazilian dental schools

Abstract

Objective: To analyze the provision of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) curricular component in dentistry courses in Brazil. Methods: A documentary, descriptive and quantitative study of 433 institutions. Results: Of all the courses analyzed, 20% have some subject related to ICT applied to dentistry. Of the 20% that offer the subject in their matrix, only 2.5% have more than one curricular component with the same purpose. Around 51.7% have a course load of between 30 and 60 hours, while 3.5% offer a course load of less than 30 hours. With regard to the subject most often covered by the subjects, it was observed that computer science, technologies, information, communication, internet, software and digital resources are the most recurrent themes. Conclusion: Most of the curricular matrices of the dentistry courses analyzed do not have components related to ICT, making it necessary for institutions to readjust their curricular models.
