Abstract

Introduction: In Brazil, the concern with Healthcare Associated
Infections (HAI) has been growing since the 1990s. The monitoring of
information regarding HAI is extremely important since an increase of
this type of infections has been noticed over time.
Objective: To identify the main strategies used for the control of HAI
in Brazil.
Methods: Elaborated based on the documental analysis of the main
policies, standards and newsletters on HAI published in Brazil.
Results: We identified five Brazilian normative documents in the last 20
years, as well as specific documents of the Patient Safety website of the
National Agency of Sanitary Surveillance (ANVISA). These normative
documents showed an advance in the last years regarding the efforts
to control the HAI. However, there is still a shortage of studies on the
results evaluation of these actions. There are still barriers as financial
support and availability of human and technological resources to
achieve the legal framework of the area.
Conclusions: Initiatives regarding the improvement of the surveillance
system or the creation of a plan/policy in the area are stimuli that must
be translated into concrete actions for a more effective control of HAI
in Brazil.
