Abstract

Introduction: Currently studies on the surveillance and epidemiology of influenza in Brazil are scarce, including in the Federal District (DF). This evidence is essential for planning and evaluation of services, especially in view of the increasing number of cases and deaths from influenza A (H1N1) and seasonal anticipation of 2016.
Objective: To describe the operationalization of the surveillance system and analyze the epidemiological situation of influenza in DF.
Methods: This is a descriptive study comprising documentary research and data analysis of epidemiological surveillance of influenza. The landmarks, the current organizational arrangement of the local system, the epidemiological situation in 2016, and the actions to face this seasonality in DF were investigated.
Results: The historical evolution of influenza surveillance in the DF and its current organizational arrangement show the continuous expansion and strengthening of this system. Until epidemiological week 30 of 2016, 430 cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome and 100 cases of influenza‑like illness were reported, with a predominance of influenza A(H1N1) virus (n = 136). To address this seasonality, actions were developed focused on epidemiological and laboratory surveillance, immunization, health education, integration of surveillance and health care services, and preparation for mass events.
Conclusion: A continuous assessment of the structure and responsiveness of the local surveillance system is required, including the monitoring of epidemiological and health services indicators and the development of integral and intersectoral actions to prevent and confront this disease.
